The restoration of the historic Mitton House at The Newbury of Brookline is a testament to preserving architectural heritage while embracing modern senior living. As part of the community’s 190,000 square feet of new construction, this restoration is focused on maintaining the timeless beauty of one of Fisher Hill’s most iconic mansions. The Mitton House now provides 20,000 square feet of restored space, offering a unique living experience within its carefully preserved Colonial/Classical Revival structure.

Built in 1896 by celebrated architect William Peters for Frederick S. and Josephine S. Gay, the Mitton House stands as a symbol of the area’s rich cultural history. Peters, a Harvard graduate and an alumnus of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, left his mark on Boston’s architectural scene with his firm Peters and Rice, renowned for its High Georgian designs. The Gays, with their deep connections to New England history, turned their home into a space filled with knowledge and community. Frederick Gay’s vast collection of rare books and involvement in local historical organizations brought an intellectual vibrancy to the property, a spirit that remains today.

The home later passed into the hands of George W. and Anne Mitton in 1927, when the Mittons began significant renovations to expand and modernize the residence. George Mitton, President and Chairman of Jordan Marsh Department Stores, hired the esteemed firm of Parker, Thurman, and Rice to design additions that included sunrooms, a library, and a larger garage. Even during the 1940s, the Mittons continued their enhancements with a screened porch and an elevator, showcasing the evolution of the home through time.

Today, the Mitton House at The Newbury offers independent living and specialized care options, blending historical charm with state-of-the-art amenities. Residents who choose to make their home within the Mitton House have the chance to live in a space that echoes a remarkable past while enjoying all the comforts of modern living. From the meticulously restored features to the well-appointed new additions, it offers a rare opportunity to be part of a storied legacy.

The restoration ensures that the elegance and history of the Mitton House will be cherished for years to come, creating an extraordinary living environment in the heart of Brookline.
