At The Newbury of Brookline, memory care goes beyond providing essential support – it is about cultivating a life of purpose, joy, and connection for every resident. Under the guidance of Celia Andrade, memory care director, the Heirloom Memory Care program has taken shape as a unique, heartfelt approach to memory care rooted in empowerment, independence, and meaningful interaction.
Since joining The Newbury in August, Andrade has brought her skills and dedication to the Heirloom program, where she now helps create experiences that are not only fulfilling for residents but also reassuring for their families.
The Heirloom Memory Care program integrates elements of the Montessori method and focuses on respect, independence, and personalized engagement. The memory care team carefully designs each activity to promote independence and purpose, creating 45-minute sessions that engage residents while honoring their individual strengths. Whether it’s a morning spent gardening, cooking with the chef, or unwinding during the weekly royal teatime, each experience fosters a sense of empowerment and belonging.
Andrade explains, “We don’t just fill the day; we create something meaningful.” This intentional approach means that activities are not only enjoyable but also serve as therapeutic experiences for residents and help them maintain a sense of control and personal accomplishment.
The Heirloom program isn’t just transformative for residents; it also brings peace and reassurance to their families. Through regular family meetings and communication updates on morning, afternoon, and evening activities, families remain actively involved in their loved ones’ journeys. Special events, such as art shows where residents’ creations are displayed for family members to enjoy, help strengthen these bonds and provide families with cherished memories of their loved ones’ contributions to the community.
Through Celia’s leadership, the Heirloom Memory Care program at The Newbury of Brookline is redefining memory care by giving residents opportunities to explore, create, and connect. It’s a place where residents are seen, celebrated, and empowered – and families can find comfort in knowing their loved ones receive exceptional, compassionate care.
